The Broadsheet Contents

The Broadsheet has been published since June 1980 with two issues published each year since 1984.

Issue Number 1 was a single sheet announcing the intent to form the Society.

Note that the decriptions are not complete for the earlier editions of the Broadsheet but hopefully they will be completed in due course.

A Horizontal Disk and Crossbar Signal The Bristol & Exeter Railway used this variation on Brunel's standard signal whereby the indication was pivoted horizontally rather than vertically. An Early Coach Body Reprinted from a 1908 magazine, a grounded coach body in Hanwell is photographed and drawn. Although the article thinks it is a broad gauge first class vehicle, more recent knowledge suggests that it is in fact only third class. 51 Spring (April) 2004

Bristol Temple Meads The front cover of our B&ER special carries a familiar picture of Temple Meads. Taken around 1870, it is often published to show the trackwork and rolling stock of the GWR station, however the B&ER headquarters dominate the scene, and the wooden "cow shed 48 Autumn (Sept) 2002
Pearson's 4-2-4 Tanks The development of James Pearson's distinctive large-wheeled express tank locomotives is followed in words and pictures. From the original 9'-wheeled (2.74m) version of 1853, through the smaller (but still huge) 7' 6" (2.29m) version and later 8' 10" (2.6 48 Autumn (Sept) 2002
Chard Two views of B&ER 4-4-0ST 64 at Chard have been unearthed. One view shows the proud staff posing with it on the turntable, the other shows it standing in the train shed ready to haul its train towards Taunton. 48 Autumn (Sept) 2002
